You have just finished your schooling and you are wondering which type of tests you should take up right? Well, Common Admission Test or CAT and that of Graduate Management Admission Test or GMAT are two of the most prestigious and top most management entrance tests. The scores of these tests get acknowledged by all the top B-schools.

What is the basic difference?

The usual difference between the two is that while CAT is that of a national level entrance test; GMAT is a global test. The scores of these tests get accepted by business schools international. Conducted by Graduate Management Admission Council, GMAT scores are acknowledged chiefly in case of NRI/Foreign students in the country such as India. However, some of the top India institutes do take GMAT scores of domestic candidates too.

What is the level of difficulty?

Both of the CAT and GMAT tests are believed to be tough nuts to crack. Every year more than two lakh students in India take CAT exam. About same number of MBA aspirants take the GMAT test also. The aspirants in India, who plan to pursue management studies in the nearing years, can either both the tests or choose to appear for one of them, depending on the institutes they shortlist, though both CAT and GMAT evaluate the English Language and Quantitative capability of the candidates and Logical Reasoning skills, the two are be nothing like each other in different aspects.

The Eligibility Criteria

GMAT: To go for GMAT test, the aspirant should have a Bachelor’s degree in any stream or that of equal from a recognized university. Final year Graduation applicants are even eligible to apply. There is no least cut off scores required to appear in GMAT.

CAT: To go for CAT test, the candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in any stream that has minimum of 50% marks or equal from a standard university. Final year Graduation applicants are also qualified to apply.

What is the Frequency or Mode of test?

GMAT: it is conducted throughout the year; the applicants can book a test slot for self from the announced calendar as per the convenience. The candidates can also re-take the exam five times within twelve months. A maximum of eight attempts are permitted to any candidate in his/her lifetime.

CAT:  this exam is conducted only once a year. CAT applications procedure begins in August and the test takes place in the last week of month of November or first week of December.
